Give 'em hell little red dog ~ It is far too quiet here without you.

Bali lived her life at a 110 mph at all times. She was a fierce protector, ball-obsessed and very loud. 60 pounds of piss and vinegar with an opinion about everything. She was my "little red dog" and I adored her. Never sick a day in her life until a suspected brain tumor took her down. It's far too quiet around here now.

Calvin was my once-in-a-lifetime dog. He was beautiful, talented and devoted to me. For more than 13 years I was blessed with his constant and reassuring presence. Everywhere I went, Calvin was right there with me, even if it meant that he had to lay on a cold hard floor in order to be close enough.
Calvin had lots of accomplishments, and I'm glad for that because they give him some sort of immortality in the record books. But it's not the titles that I will miss, but his unconditional love and devotion. He was MY dog. He was polite to everybody he met and was even willing to cuddle with some of his favorite people, but I was the center of his universe, and he made sure that I knew it.
There are so many little things that I am going to miss about him - the way he'd circle around on the bed until he found just the right spot to plop down so that he was pressed as close to me as he could get. His cranky old man attitude, because he knew that he was the most important dog on the planet and should be treated as such. The weird little white spot on his head. That he would never give me more than one kiss at a time, because any more than one wouldn't be dignified. But mostly I'll miss his constant presence and the knowledge that he was always watching over me.
Godspeed Calvin. Say Hi to Portia and to all of the other great dogs that have gone on before you. Try not to be too bossy with the girls. I miss you more than words could ever say.

Portia was our first Doberman. Somehow we managed to avoid the normal pitfalls of the average first-time buyer, because Portia really did come from show lines! Although she was purchased to be our pet, we were encouraged to try showing her. Although we only had modest success, it was enough to get to get us hooked on competive dog events!
Portia was an ideal first Doberman. She was unbelievably sweet and lady-like, as well as being an incredibly easy puppy. She tried very hard to cooperate with all of the obedience and agility training, but in the end, it was pretty clear that she thought that her place was on the couch waitng for everybody else to come home from the dog shows. She didn't need ribbons or trophies to know that she was the undisputed queen of the household, and that we loved her very much.
